With more than 1.3 million residents and over 840 square miles, Jacksonville is quickly becoming one of the United States’ major cities and is the second fastest-growing city in the Southeast. Positioned along both banks of the St. John’s River in the First Coast region of Florida, Jacksonville is a major commercial center and port. From cruise ships to commercial vessels to national and international flights, the city is a major center for travel and businesses and is host to the third largest naval concentration in the world.
Navigable waterways are a major attraction in Duval County and play a tremendous role in Jacksonville’s economy. The St. Johns River Ferry, also called the Mayport Ferry, is the only remaining public auto ferry in Florida and is a popular way to reach Amelia Island, Mayport and Fort George Island. The Napoleon Bonaparte Broward Bridge and Dames Point Bridge, connects the Southside Jacksonville area to North Jacksonville. It is the longest concrete cable-stayed bridge in the United States, measuring in at two miles long and rising 175 feet above the St. Johns River.
One of the city’s most popular areas, North Jacksonville is a premier area for new Duval County residents and visitors. Many Northside communities especially appeal to boaters. For instance, The Cape, Black Hammock Island, Amelia View, Fort George Island, Newport Harbor, San Mateo and Eagle Bend all offer boaters waterway access. Additional neighborhoods in North Jacksonville include Shell Bay, Oakbrook, Dinsmore, Pecan Park, Downtown, Lexington Park, Eastside, Garden City, Hidden Lake Estates, New Berlin, Bainbridge, Oceanway, Springfield, Turtle Creek and Yellow Bluff, among many others.
Dunn Creek Pointe, Victoria Pointe, Victoria Preserve, Victoria Lakes, Waterbrook Falls, North Creek and Caney Branch Plantation are all fantastic neighborhoods with a variety of homes on excellent sites. Another Northside neighborhood, Villages of Westport, is a new master-planned North Jacksonville community near the Jacksonville International Airport. Villages of Westport offers a generous mix of single-family homes, condominiums and townhomes, planned office space, shops, parks and restaurants with reserved acreage for new schools. Heron’s Walk is another of North Jacksonville’s premier communities, offering marsh front lots with views of the Nassau River. It is a gated community that will soon host a large, state-of-the-art amenities center.
This booming area is also home to a large number of Duval County magnet program schools. LaVilla School of the Arts, Kirby-Smith and Darnell-Cookman ideally prepare Duval County gifted students for its college preparatory magnet schools. Paxon School for Advanced Studies, a public college and preparatory high school, is currently ranked seventh in the nation by Newsweek. Stanton College Preparatory School is also one of the top academic schools in the nation today and offers both honors-level, Advanced Placement and the International Baccalaureate Program dual enrollment courses through the University of North Florida and Florida Community College at Jacksonville.
North Jacksonville is also the headquarters of CSX Corporation, the owner of the largest rail network in the eastern U.S. and the employer of over 4,000 people. A major economic engine in Northeast Florida and headquartered in North Jacksonville, JAXPORT owns and operates three public marine terminals: Blount Island Marine Terminal, Talleyrand Marine Terminal and the Dames Point Marine Terminal. Another large employer in North Jacksonville, the Jacksonville International Airport, provides over 200 arrivals and departures daily to national and international locations.
Rightly named “Florida’s First Coast,” North Jacksonville is a fantastic recreational destination, from state parks to Fort George Island, a popular location for boaters to anchor and swim. The island has been occupied for over 5,000 years and was named for a fort built in the early 18th century to defend the colony of Georgia. The island also offers off-road biking, hiking and fishing, as well as the recently restored Ribault Club, a meeting space for special functions. Oceanway Sports Complex, also located in North Jacksonville, is centered around Oceanway Pond and Oceanway Fishing Pier, which provide access to several great fishing species, including largemouth bass, bream and channel catfish. The Complex has a public boat ramp, a handicapped-accessible fishing pier, a 6.3 acre lake, a playground for children and ball fields for year-round enjoyment.
